Amari Martindale, Class of 2026
As a shy sophomore, Amari transferred to Capital Prep from a boarding school in Massachusetts. With the encouragement of our Illuminators, he quickly became a standout scholar and two-sport athlete. He took on leadership roles in Student Government, becoming Head Boy his Junior year and a student board member for Capital Prep.
"My first two months here, I tried to avoid interaction and just do my work. I was shy, but my Illuminators came up to me, and they all put my voice out there for me, and they allowed me to discover that voice I had and to share it with other people."
Amari will be attending Brown University with an academic scholarship in Fall 2026, where he will be majoring in Economics and Finance.

Attending Morehouse has helped my family envision a brighter future for us all and provide hope for them.
Words can’t explain the time I’m having at Morehouse but in short: it’s the best decision I’ve ever made in my entire life. Morehouse has truly become a home to me where I can authentically be myself and be within an area that values my black life & body. I’ve truly never been happier in my life. So many opportunities, lessons, tools, and people that I’ve met have shaped me into a man in contrast to time in New York where I was a boy with a child mindset.
I have truly found a place that can be called my home when I’m away from home and I have grown as a man.
Going into this year not knowing anyone was very frightening, but it definitely changed as I was welcomed by my brothers and sisters with open arms and have formed long lasting bonds that will outlive my life; a legacy.

I feel that all of the CPREP core values, Collaborator, Problem Solver, Researcher, Empathetic Citizen, and Pillar of Knowledge, played an important role throughout my time at St. Thomas Aquinas College. I became involved on campus during my freshman year by serving as
a tour guide and welcoming prospective students and their families.
My project focused on sexism in gaming and esports, and I was also able to learn from my fellow scholars’ projects, including research on toxic masculinity. Their previous
work guided me and helped me conduct my own research.
Capital Prep encouraged me to become a critical thinker, someone who could think outside the box, research and learn about different topics, and present information in a way that made others care about it.
Over time, I became someone the college could count on, whether I was providing a tour for legendary New York Ranger Mike Richter or assisting the college with media and photography. I also served as an orientation leader, becoming someone incoming students could rely on for advice, support, and guidance as they began their own college journeys. These experiences allowed me to demonstrate each of the CPREP core values in different ways.

From the first day I walked through the doors of Capital Prep, I knew it was a special place... a place that could be life-changing.
As a Social Justice Illuminator at Capital Prep Harbor Upper School, he led classrooms where scholars critically examined the world around them. He launched groundbreaking student-led initiatives like Journey to Justice, a social justice symposium, and The Borderline Report, a talk-show-style platform for discussing real-world community issues. His work inside the classroom and in the broader school community centered around one thing: empowerment through education.
When he first walked through the doors of Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford as a scholar, something immediately clicked for Wynton Borders. He sensed, even as a young student, that Capital Prep was no ordinary school — it was a place that could truly change lives.
“I knew I was destined to make an impact,” he would later recall. “The collective goal here wasn’t just academic success. It was to change our community — and ultimately, the world.”
That belief, forged early, has since guided his entire educational and professional journey.
During his junior year, a moment of clarity shifted his course. Inspired by the leadership around him, he walked into the office of then-principal Dr. Steve Perry and made a bold declaration:
“Someday, I’m going to have your job.”
It wasn’t just youthful ambition — it was purpose. That purpose drove him to become Head Boy of the Student Government in his senior year, then graduate from Morehouse College, one of the nation’s leading HBCUs. But his story didn’t end there — he returned home to where it all began, determined to "pay it forward.
His commitment extended to the athletic field as Head Football Coach and to academic leadership as Academic Dean, where he harnessed data to drive instruction and create actionable learning plans tailored to every scholar.
Eventually, the bold declaration he made years before came full circle — he became Principal of Capital Prep Harbor Upper School. With Capital Prep culture etched into his DNA, he led with clarity, conviction, and a deep understanding of the school's mission: cultivating lifelong learners and agents of social change.
Today, he serves as the Director of Professional Learning for the entire Capital Prep network, a role that allows him to shape and support the development of educators across campuses — ensuring that the mission continues to scale with impact.
From scholar to system-wide leader, his journey is a testament to the power of vision, purpose, and the belief that schools — and the people in them — can truly change the world.
Jania Jones, Class of 2022
Jania was the first Capital Prep Harlem scholar to receive her Associate Degree in Journalism & Communications before obtaining her High School Diploma. She graduated as a member of the Housatonic Honors Program & Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society. In addition, she earned the Outstanding Academic Achievement in the Journalism Program Award and was recognized for Outstanding Service to HCC Student Magazine, Horizons. Now forging her path at New York University, she’s studying Computer Science and Mandarin — a combination that’s taking her around the world!
